What is Xbox 360 Drive Flashing?

Basically, There is a hardware chip on the Xbox DVD drive, that controls if you can play backup games or not. To enable a xbox 360 to play backups you need to flash your DVD drive, which involves the modder opening up your 360 and changing/flashing the software on the drive.

All older/Fat consoles are moddable. Since Slims are still being made not all Slim models are. Its not super easy to tell which DVD drive you have inside your slim, but a couple of factors can help. Most of the drives are Liteons, there is one type of Hitachi Click here to see how to check by ejecting the DVD drive tray). Australia is behind with stock types, so as of August 2011 all stock is still 9504/2702, 0225 or 0401. Unfortunately the slim drives are all WRITE protected. So we have to do some crazy stuff to write to it (see video here). 

Disadvantages: DVD drive flashing is NOT a once off. Everytime Microsoft changes special protection etc, you have to flash the DVD drive again (at $25) and Open the console everytime. A solution like the x360Key allows the user to update the device without opening the console at all, which means all updates are free and easy. (Xbox Live safe? Hmm)

Red Ring Of Death Error Codes

Oh no you finally got the RROD

Well first try to retrieve the error code to assist diagnosis.

Press the sync button on the front of the 360 (keep it pressed ) and press eject FOUR times, the leds on front will flash 4 different times.


4 flashes = 0, 1 flash =1 to make a code like 0020 which means GPU error etc.

Depending on the error code (memory error) the Team Executor RROD kit at £4.95 might fix it: Team executor RROD fix kit. or it might need a full 'x-clamp replacement' (go google) but most of these errors can be repaired nowadays.

** Update **

I have now sucessfully repaired a RROD console using a kit 'similar' to this one. "Click Me" (I however replaced both mounts & the GPU & CPU gunk with Artic Silver) so i am now willing to have a go at repairing these now so contact me..

Reports started apearing over the web of 360 owners once again getting banned but, how & why?

Well once again its down to the Backups (& not the firmware or mod) being detected so, it seems Being ixtreme compatible is not enough anymore. If your backup is of a pre-release, has been ripped poorly or has incorrect stealth files (pfi, dmi ssector) it will be identified by Xbox live as so and you also face a Live ban. Once again, if you do not use live then this should not bother you at all.

What to do?

** Update **

Well i'm no longer banned (& rightly so i say) as of tonight (17-12-07) i have been reinstated on Live. This is very interesting as it proves a few things..

• Consoles can be unbanned. (Good news if you bought a banned one from GAME)
• There current detection method sucks.
• They have NOT yet successfully detected firmware.
• This latest ban was based upon Backups
• Somebody at MS is looking for a new job.

system blade > console settings > system info. On the right side, the kernel version / dash version is shown.

It seems that the updates microsoft has been pushing out (Via Live & Games)will try to prevent the use of this exploit but its an interesting one to watch..

The Current popular method of Modifying Xbox360's involves replacing the Bios Firmware on the DVD-ROM drive within the Xbox 360 unit. Whilst this does involve opening your Xbox360 & will invalidate any warranty you may have the benefits of playing backups (& saving your precious originals) is IMHO well worth it. The majority of 360's have either the Toshiba/Samsung, Hitachi/LG or Benq drive and three separate iXtreme firmwares are readily available for each drive. Identifying which DVD Drive you have inside your 360 is easily done (click me) If your drive looks like neither of the ones in the picture then perhaps MS have just added a new model eh.

Not content with simply modifying the existing firmware the programmers have included a great feature which actually locks the drive at 4x instead of 12x. This makes such a difference to the noise of the 360 but no difference to the loading times... ok it adds about 3-4 seconds in reality.

This Exploit has been available for ages and the programmers behind it are constantly improving, discovering & adding new features. Now chances are that if your reading this you either have or are considering modifying your xbox so what should you know?

Well if all you want to do is play backups and you will never connect to Xbox live any version of iXtreme or xtreme software will be fine for you for you but... If you want to connect to Xbox Live and get updates, demo's and downloads etc then you should know what version you have flashed onto your 360 and that your backups are fully stealthed or you may find your console unresolvably banned from XBOX live in the future.

My Xbox 360 (Xtreme Modded)

Recently grabbed me a Xbox 360 and (of course) immediately installed the Xtreme Drive Bios mod (Samsung Drive) seems to works flawlessly...so far. Hooked upto Xbox Live (Dr3wst3er 360)

I Have now modded a few Xbox 360's (Tosh n Samsungs) so if i can help you out let me know..

Samsung Drives seem to have less trouble with backups but Hitachi users can try this method and always use verbatim media at 2.4x Max. (which is getting harder to find for some reason ;-)

1. Turn on xbox 360 with no game inserted.
2. Eject tray Via dashboard
3. Put backup in tray.
4. Press and hold X in the middle of controller.
5. Select turn off console, Tray will go back in on its own.
6. Wait a few seconds... You can usually hear the disk spinning.
7. Turn on console with the X in the middle of the controller.
8. Hopefully you can enjoy playing your game.


Hmmm Seems i cant play "Dead Rising" for any length of time. (Game freezes randomly and my saved game also corrupts) A quick google search shows i am not alone but just what is the problem? Maybe the old overheating issue? (although everything else plays fine) so i just installed me some "Blue" Talismoon whisper fans. (see link on sidebar) Nice fans, Looks nice, fitted easily, shifts more air and are about 7db quieter but did they solve my problem....Nope. If i ever find out why i will post here or feel free to leave a comment if you know..
